I really enjoyed the story Ricky. The pics were awesome as well. Off topic: Did you ever meet Eric Davis or Barry Larkin?

I totally remember Rick Mahler. He was actually really good. 1989 was there year I really got into baseball myself, and 1990, the reds had a squad. Chris Sabo, Larkin, Davis, O'Neil, Hal Morris on and on. Also the nasty boys, Charlton,Dibble, Myers. Man, great squad, Tom Browning, Danny Jackson,Jose Rijo.

They were supposed to be smashed by the A's but swept the World Series.

I feel terrible for your loss. I'm glad you've found a way through it. I'm sure you have a lot of great memories though, and you'll always have those.

Agreed. Thanks for sharing your story! I was into collecting baseball cards as well in the late 80s/early 90s and I know I had some of those exact cards.

Thanks Nick, I met them both actually.  Larkin came over to our house in Georgia once and I shook Eric Davis' hand in a hotel lobby and in the locker room.  I asked my dad, just a few years before he died, who the best player he ever played with was... and he said "Larkin".  I was expecting him to say someone like John Smotlz, Tom Glavine, Larry Walker, Marquis Grissom, Eric Davis, or Dale Murphy.  So, I was a little surprised that he thought Larkin was the best but looking back now, I can see it.

Thank you, the Reds had a great squad in 1989 as well... but due to injuries and their manager getting banned from baseball (Pete Rose) they didn't go as far as they should have.  Indeed it was a great year and I have fond memories of that time.  My mom actually gave me my dad's 1990 World Championship ring but I left it with her for fear of something happening to it in my possession (She gave my brother my dad's Atlanta Braves 1991 National League Championship ring).  My goal is to keep these in the family for generations to come.

I appreciate your condolences and all the other comments guys.  It means a lot!

Great story too, one of the best I've read. Very interesting. I too have some of those exact baseball cards! Glad to see you coped with the stress through a viable outlet such as video games rather than turning to drugs and depression as some young people do.
