Has anyone been able to get the two fairies and rescue the princess? I wonder if there's only one way to do it.

I haven't done it personally, but there are definitely more than one path through. That said, I would assume the one given by the map is definitely the longest, but is likely the most rewarding as well, as you'll see most of what the game has to offer. It's definitely tough though...I mean, the developers gave you 50 lives and the publishers gave you a map through the entire game, and STILL, there's very few people who can claim they've finished it.

I'm curious if the high bidder of the $873.04 Stadium Events (cart-only) realizes that it's nowhere nearly as rare as about 20+ games I can think of that sell for 1/10th that amount?  At any rate, I wanted to draw attention to this trend: if people say it's rare, it must be true, and therefore it must be had at any price."

After trying for ages when I was a kid to beat this sadistic game I used the Game Genie to beat it. I believe that is the only  possible way to beat it. Without the Game Genie I could get the two fairies and then I would run out of keys.

i love this game, but it's a real pain in the ass due to the stiff movement. it'd be great if someone could hack it to make the guy run/jump a bit better.

Miss Clawful beat it, and she had to make her own map from scratch.

I also beat it with my own map from scratch. In fact I had no idea that it came with a map until recently. I went through and mapped out every single room (100 total) and then decided on my course from there. I had a ton of fun with this one.

That would definitely be the best way to go.  Curious as to how you mapped it out though, as I plan to run through it sometime reasonably soon.

^I got the same error, but if you copy and paste the link directly into the address bar, it works for some reason.

my wife loves this game. She got pretty far once upon a time. I bet if she devoted the time to it, she could beat it. Not me, I am prone to rages.

I just recently sold a map and manual for this game. I beat it using an emulator and gave myself unlimited keys. Even cheating, this game required a lot of time.

It's actually pretty detailed considering how small it is. I think it needs to be at least twice as big to be much use, but it definitely helps. Anyway, that's definitely the map...and happens to be one of the few pieces I'm not selling with the rest of my NES/SNES paperwork. Just saying

Has anyone been able to get all the items in the castle without cheating?

I just spent 2hrs trying to figure out one room, only to get suck two rooms later, and had to reset. This game is evil.

I'm using Andrew Schultz's fantastic walkthrough. I actually keep track of the keys I've got and the doors I've opened using his little chart at the bottom. His FAQ is on Gamefaqs if anyone wants to check it out. It details every room. Mr. Schultz did mention that he believed Tom Votava could get all but one item, without cheating.

What arch 8ngel said. Beat this game once many years ago, it was a two week ordeal, mapped a little of the game out each game I played, and because I didn't know about the options that help you when you get stuck (activated via controller 2) each time I got stuck I had to start all over again from the beginning, but I spent all day most of those two weeks playing it. It was a tough game, hated at first but found the more I played it the more I realized how much I was enjoying it. This was the very first NES game that I ever made maps for too, after that I started hand drawing maps for other games too.

If I remember, I'll take a look at my map tonight. I know the basics of how I did it, but not all the details.

Man I remember beating this game right before I went on to beat Deadly Towers a long, long time ago.

If that floating flame enemy gives you trouble, just suicide on the elevator, but make sure you take the enemy with you. You'll respawn, and it won't!

Yay, just beat it. The first time I played this game was when I first saw this thread last week. Awesome game.
